As we approach Thanksgiving it’s a good time to reflect. Recently my wife and I took a relaxing vacation during which I celebrated another birthday. This one was particularly significant as my wife and I are now “empty nesters” with our youngest, very independent, child off at college. The absence of kids after nineteen years really brings this reality home Independence is progress, but also a real transition for every parent. We solidly reached another stage of life.
With time on the beach, I realized that much of my life has passed with incredible speed - many milestones seemed like they occurred yesterday. High school and college graduation, first love, first job, marriage, children, death of a parent, a child’s first bike ride, first Halloween and many Thanksgivings and Christmas’ have passed too quickly. Like many, I wish I could relive many of those moments back, but – that’s what makes us human. Sometimes, I remind myself of my father. As much as things change – things stay the same.
That’s why I think many find Thanksgiving such an enjoyable time. With the weather turning brisk, the warm house, the smells of Thanksgiving dinner cooking, the sounds of family members arriving, it’s a wonderful time to pause, sit, talk, remember past joys with loved ones and to reflect upon those we have lost and the wonderful blessings we have received.
Professionally, we have had the opportunity to meet and make many friends and have had the privilege to serve family members and their loved ones from all walks of life, often at difficult times. We have met many remarkable people and they have added so much to our lives. We are truly thankful.
I sincerely hope that you too will have the opportunity to spend this Thanksgiving with loved ones.
